On Demand — Zak Al-Alami: Busking And Beyond

Webcast sponsored by ETC

Thursday, October 11, 2018 | 2PM ET / 11AM PT

Join lighting director and top-notch programmer Zak Al-Alami for a live webcast on October 11, 2018. One of his specialties is busking for concerts and an array of live performances. His consoles of choice include the ETC Eos family especially the Ti and Gio@5, and as he explains, busking is the equivalent of lighting something on the fly—and lighting it well.

In this webcast, Al-Alami will discuss topics including:

  • Approaches to his work–based in story telling;
  • Varieties in structuring a look—layers, transitions, tightly cued vs busking;
  • Varieties of busking—“improvisational lighting”—from totally off-the-cuff to mixing entire looks and concepts; from tiniest to largest rigs;
  • Console layout/setup–no right answer, just what keeps things where you can get to them; different shows/stories/approaches call for different setups;
  • Basic console tips—inhibs are your friend; standard shielded subs (works, house lights, stand lights, hazer, specials); variety of strobes and pops; macros; listen to music and watch things with a sense of how you’d approach lighting it;
  • His role as lighting director at Jazz At Lincoln Center and for Arc3Design.

Zakaria Al-Alami is the lighting director for Jazz at Lincoln Center, and lighting director for Arc3Design. At Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall (Columbus Circle, NYC), Zak lights all concerts and special engagements that comprise the JALC concert season, as well as a portion of visiting productions and events that roll thru the multi-venue performance facility. With Arc3Design, the range of work is expanded to even more special events and projects, concerts, performances and TV tapings, working in a wide variety of venues, from the top of the World Trade Center, to Madison Square Garden, to empty San Francisco piers, to middle-of-nowhere tents, to the occasional actual theater, and points in between.
