Titan Mobile Knocks It Out Of The Park For MLB

GREENSBORO, NC -- As Major League Baseball pennant races hit a feverish pitch during these dogs days of summer, many teams are adding value to ticket prices with post-game stadium concerts by an eclectic group of all-star talent ranging from country's Martina McBride to rap's 50 Cent.

Much like a manager draws up a powerful yet balanced lineup full of professionals, turnkey production house SE Systems of Greensboro, NC was summoned earlier this summer by Select Artists Associates of Scottsdale, AZ to handle the pro audio/lighting needs for many of these entertaining shows hosted by the Washington Nationals and New York Mets, among others scheduled through the end of September.

Demanding a seamless, quick switchover as soon as the last pitch is thrown, SE Systems is tapping Avolites' Titan Mobile lighting console for its small footprint (19" x 14"), perfect for the field-friendly, time-sensitive roll-on for such a post-game assignment, explains SE lighting designer Nehemiah (aka "Captain Nemo") Grubbs.

"Our standard MLB lighting package is very compact due to setup time and space configurations on the rolling platforms," Grubbs explains. "We set up a stage on a cart at second base with speaker carts and use the Titan Mobile at home plate," he adds.

What Grubbs likes about the Titan Mobile is that "it's a small board with lots of functions; a small footprint at the front of the house. Very few other briefcase-type consoles have the capabilities of this little console. It can emulate a much larger, more sophisticated desk." An added bonus, adds Grubbs, is that the Titan Mobile can use many levels together without any DMX loss.

"We're under a pretty quick timeframe," he says. "When the game is over, they want that concert up and going as quickly as possible."

John R. Lewis, Director, Special Events Design and Management, notes that the current MLB shows build on a fruitful relationship SE has shared with Select Artists founder Charles Johnston since 1998 on making sure its special events are equipped with the right equipment.

SE Systems, founded 41 years ago this October, is well acquainted with audio/lighting needs at concerts as the exclusive supplier of the annual Merlefest bluegrass festival - also a long-time Avolites client - as well as serving as the production provider for the current Allison Krauss and Willie Nelson tour. The company also provided audio and lighting services for Carrie Underwood's recent concert at Jacksonville's EverBank Field. And, related to baseball, SE handled concerts closing the New York Yankees' old stadium and opening the new one several years ago.

During MLB's current post-game concerts, the only stadium lights typically left on are the LED rings, which leaves the Titan Mobile to helm SE's standard spec package consisting of ROBE beams and washes, Martin strobes, various accent lighting configured around the band setup, Lumen Radio wireless DMX for all instruments and Doug Fleenor DMX splitters.
