UCLA Theatre department is breaking new ground with their television lighting course taught by Emmy Award winning designer, Olin Younger. The 10-week class, starting in April 2007, will focus not only on various lighting design techniques for television but also on the business and technical aspects of the craft. The syllabus will cover game shows, talk shows, single and multi-camera shows, sketch and situation comedy, music award shows, and remote/location shooting. The business/technical aspect will include approach and control issues, boom operators and key grips, plots and equipment lists, power sources, new equipment, budgets, crews and unions and producer/client relationships.
Bill Ward, chairman of the Theatre deptartment at UCLA, set this class up because students asked for a lighting for camera class. The course is an undergraduate or post graduate offering. Olin was recommended, and ultimately chosen, because of his extensive work on all types of shows.
Says Olin, "This is an exciting and intimidating opportunity and I'm really looking forward to it!"
Olin will also reach outside the classroom experience with trips to both PRG-LA and DPI's ShowViz Lite Lab to address computer pre-visualization. Emmy Award winning lighting designer Kim Killingsworth will serve as guestlecturer, teaching design technique for plays adapted for television (Fail Safe and On Golden Pond).
