A judging panel of entertainment professionals shortlisted Donald Holder's design for Porgy and Bess for the Opera Award in the Theatre category in Live Design's 2020 Design Achievement Awards. Vote for the most outstanding projects now!

Donald Holder utilized the Met's newly purchased 70 Elation Professional Artiste Monet™ LED profile moving head luminaires to create a warm, natural-looking color palette that is evocative of sun, candle, and torchlight for Porgy and Bess. He positioned the fixtures from multiple locations to carve out specific portions of Michael Yeargan's two-story set with consistency and accuracy. Using the wide zoom optics and heavy frost options, Holder simulated a large brushstroke of sunlight glancing across all the rooftops using just one or two Monet fixtures focused from a singular, strategic location.

“This production is flawless. Not groundbreaking, but flawless.” — Clifton Taylor, lighting designer and judge for the Design Achievement Awards
