Set in Gaza, a capital of ancient Philistia, and in the foothill country toward Jerusalem at about 150 BC, Saint-Saëns’s Samson et Dalila follows the biblical tale of a man who is seduced and betrayed. Director Darko Tresnjak didn’t change the time or place for his production of the epic opera for the Metropolitan Opera, but he did integrate modern elements. And his focus? Spectacle.
