Jane Cox To Speak On Light And Color In Storytelling

Jane Cox, Brooklyn, NY-based lighting designer for theatre, opera, dance, and music, and director/senior lecturer in theatre at Princeton University, will present a talk on “Light and Color In Storytelling” on Wednesday, August 29, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Glasshouse Arts Centre, Stourbridge, England. The lecture is in conjunction with the exhibit, experienceColour, which runs through October 14.

Cox’s talk is based on the truth that “we relate to light from the moment we enter the world until the moment we leave it but most of us don't give it much thought.” She will investigate how emotion and perception are influenced by light and color: What can we learn from observing light in our day-to-day lives, and how can we apply those observations to making design choices onstage and off?

Following the talk, there will be an opportunity for the audience to play with theatre lighting, and to conduct creative explorations into how color and lighting choices affect our perceptions of character, narrative, and mood. How can we use light and color to harness our imaginations to the stories we are trying to tell?

“The exhibit is a science exhibit for the general public,” explains Cox. “I'm giving a lecture/demo and doing a workshop on light and color to evangelize about the lighting field. I'll be using ETC Source Four LED Series 2 Lustrs and Rosco and GAM color to do some experiments with the audience on color in lighting.”
