Dane Laffrey's Set Designs For Once On This Island

Scenic designer Dane Laffrey worked closely with director Michael Arden on the current Broadway revival of Once On This Island, which opened at Circle In The Square in December 2017. Their process included a trip to Haiti for research and visual inspiration.

Acclaimed by the critics, this revival of Once On This Island features costumes by Clint Ramos, lighting by Jules Fisher and Peggy Eisenhauer, and sound by Peter Hylenski. Set in the French West Indies, the story is that of star-crossed lovers, Daniel and Ti Moune, much in the vein of Romeo And Juliet. "A unified team effort is needed to build a piece in a space like this. Conversations about integrating sound and lighting into the visual picture, and whether to conceal or contextualize those elements, happened constantly in our prep and throughout the tech and preview process in the theatre," says scenic designer Dane Laffrey about working with the other designers on this musical revival with its bright colors, tropical rhythms, and use of found objects. Laffery was nominated for a 2018 Tony for these scenic designs.
