BSMC Speakers Acme Sound Partners Nominated For A Tony And Drama Desk

Broadway Sound Master Classes speakers Acme Sound PartnersTom Clark, Mark Menard, and Nevin Steinberg—have been nominated in sound design categories for a Tony Award for Fences and a Drama Desk Award for Ragtime. This is Acme Partners’ third consecutive nomination in as many years as the Tony for Sound Design has existed.

“We are thrilled to receive our third Tony nomination and for such an elegant production of Fences,” says Nevin Steinberg on behalf of the partnership. “And we are especially excited that the Drama Desks remembered the brief run of Ragtime, which makes us very proud.” The partners already have Tony nominations for their work on Hair and In the Heights, both ofwhich are currently running on Broadway, as is their sound design for The Addams Family.

In their session at the BSMC, You Say Tomahto...: Transferring the Sound Design of a Broadway Musical to London's West End (Sunday, May 23), they will compare and contrast the technology, preparation, installation, and operation of sound designs on Broadway and in the London commercial theatre. Using examples from the UK transfers of Avenue Q, Spamalot, The Drowsy Chaperone, Legally Blonde, and HAIR, the focus will be on how variations in sound department job descriptions “across the pond” have a huge impact on the production process. They’ll also look at the propensity for West End Theatres to be narrower and taller than their Broadway counterparts, and how this affects loudspeaker system design.
