Lighting designer Kevin Adams, who has won back-to-back Tony Awards in 2007 and 2008 for Spring Awakening and The 39 Steps returns to the Broadway Lighting Master Classes (BLMC) faculty, presenting “The Fine Arts Influence on a Lighting Designer” on Tuesday, May 19 at NYU.
Adams, who also lit the current Broadway revival of Hair, also has Broadway credits that include Next To Normal, Passing Strange, and Take Me Out, while his Off-Broadway credits include the cult rock hit, Hedwig And The Angry Inch.
In designing the lighting for Hair, Adams notes: “I had been listening to the music since I was a child in the late ‘60s. In fact, this was the show that got me interested in rock theatre. I had worked with Diane Paulus many times before, including on another environmental period music event production, The Donkey Show, also designed by Scott Pask.” Adams joined the production team for Hair at the time of its transfer to Broadway. “I wanted it to look contemporary, loose, and kind of off-the-cuff—simple, not over determined.”
The Broadway Lighting Master Classes will be held May 18 to 20 at NYU’s Skirball Center For The Performing Arts and includes a ticket to attend 9 to 5 The Musical on Broadway, with lighting by Jules Fisher and Peggy Eisenhauer, additional lighting for Broadway by Ken Posner, and images by Peter Nigrini. All four designers will engage in a discussion of the lighting for 9 to 5 as it evolved from Los Angeles to Broadway.
