31 Days Of Plots: Spring Awakening

To celebrate the achievements of 2019 and to welcome all the prospects of 2020, Live Design is conducting 31 Days Of Plots. Every day during the month of December 2019, we will highlight a different lighting design, from across theatre, concert tours, corporate events, and more.

Lighting designer Tori Mays has shared the lighting plots for Arizona Repertory Theatre's April production of Spring Awakening, for which she was shortlisted for a 2019 KOI-USA Award.

"The goal of the lighting design was to unveil moral conflicts between characters and present them to the audience in a manner that pushes them to reconsider their personal ethics and values," says Mays. "Artistic lighting choices were rooted in the separation between the inner monologues of rebellious teenagers and uncompromising adults. This backbone of the design relied on a large range of powerful illuminations balanced with stillness in the shadows of reality. Kathleen Allen from the Arizona Daily Star said, “Be forewarned: You are likely to relive all the insecurities, confusion and angst that marked the hormone-heavy teen years at Arizona Repertory Theatre’s ‘Spring Awakening.’ The production is so vivid."

Check out other plots from the 31 Days here, and stay tuned for more over the next 2 days.
