31 Days of Plots: Slave Play (2021)

Live Design's fourth annual 31 Days Of Plots features one production per day during the month of December 2021, highlighting a different lighting design, from across theatre, concert tours, corporate events, live for broadcast, and more, as we wind down 2021 and head toward the new year.

On Day 19 of 31 Days Of Plots 2021, we revisit Slave Play, Jeremy O. Harris’ searing look at racism and sexuality, which is back on Broadway after a Covid-induced hiatus. Check out the light plots by Jiyoun Chang, who won a Tony nomination for Slave Play, her first Broadway production as lighting designer. The rest of the creative team, including scenic designer Clint Ramos, sound designer Lindsay Jones, and costume designer Dede Ayite, also collected nominations for their work on this play. With a total of 12 nominations, the most ever for a non-musical, Slave Play was snubbed, overlooked by the judges, a surprise to many.

Chang utilized overhead trusses, ladders, goalposts, and sidelights to avoid hitting the striking mirror wall scenic elements. Since the overhead position was so tight, ETC Source Four LED Series 2 Lustr was added to the regular ETC Source Four sidelights. GLP impressions and Martin Mac Encore Performance CLDs supported back and down light systems. GLP Impressions and Chroma-Q Color Force 12s were used as the house light system. Bridget Chervenka programmed the lighting on an ETC Eos lighting console. PRG supplied the lighting equipment.
