31 Days of Plots: Jagged Little Pill

To reflect on the creative, innovative moments of 2020 and to welcome the hope that the New Year brings, Live Design is conducting 31 Days Of Plots. Every day during the month of December 2020, we will highlight a different lighting design, from across theatre, concert tours, corporate events, and more.

Justin Townsend shares his lighting plots for Jagged Little Pill, featuring his first all-LED lighting rig, for which he has been nominated for a 2020 Tony Award. "We knew from the beginning we wanted a muscular ceiling, almost like an iconic shape of a suburban house, with an angled, sloped truss that mimics a roof of the house and three layers of that," says Townsend. The solid ceiling of light created an energy above the whole piece. Townsend withheld the color red for most of the musical until "You Oughta Know” in Act II to heighten the fervent energy of song with an exclusive explosion of color. Read more about the full lighting design for Jagged Little Pill on Broadway.
