31 Days of Plots: A Wonderful World

To reflect on the creative, innovative moments of 2020 and to welcome the hope that the New Year brings, Live Design is conducting 31 Days Of Plots. Every day during the month of December 2020, we will highlight a different lighting design, from across theatre, concert tours, corporate events, and more.

A Wonderful World was the biggest show Miami New Drama had ever produced and only their second musical. "With over 50 scenes, it required a plot that was as flexible as possible as the show spans Louis Armstrong’s life and career as told through the eyes of his four wives," explains lighting designer Cory Pattak. "The show bounces around from New Orleans to Chicago to Hollywood and New York. Like most regional productions, the lighting rig was a mix of house inventory and rental equipment from Christie Lites. The workhorse fixtures of the plot were [Martin] Mac Quantum Spots and Quantum Washes, which took care of everything from tight specials, gobo textures, full stage color washes, and scenery toning. Four Mac Encores FOH assisted with the conventional FOH package as well as systems of ProLights’ Eclipse FS LED fixtures, which did great punchy saturates for scenery and dance numbers. The followspots were two ETC Source Four 10° lamped at 750W. Adam Koch’s set was full of color and texture which was supplemented with a supply of lightboxes, flex neon, LED tape, and marquee bulbs to help track Louis’ journey to stardom.

"After a handful of previews, the show opened, and closed, on March 13," concludes Pattak. "Miami New Drama hopes to bring the show back when deemed safe again so more audiences can experience this exciting new work."
