Nominations were announced this morning for the 2017 Tony Awards by Tony winner Jane Krakowski and Hamilton Tony nominee Christopher Jackson.The 71st annual Tony Awards will take place June 11 at Radio City Music Hall, hosted by Oscar and Tony winner Kevin Spacey.
Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet Of 1812 leads the nominations list, in categories including lighting, scenic, and costume design of a musical. The show's director, Rachel Chavkin, will also present the design team (Bradley King, lighting; Mimi Lien, sets; Nicholas Pope, sound; Paloma Young, costumes) with an award at the Live Design Achievement Awards in New York on June 12.
In another nod to design categories, not only was it recently announced that the Tony Award for sound design will be reinstated next year, but also Gareth Fry and Pete Malkin will be presented with Special Tony Awards for their sound design for The Encounter, which incorporated the use of headphones to provide audiences an intimate, environmental depiction of the Amazon rainforest.
