The 2008 Broadway Sound Master Classes Faculty Has Arrived

Abe Jacob, creative consultant for the sixth annual Broadway Sound Master Classes (BSMC) has announced an outstanding faculty of top name sound designers for this year’s classes which include a ticket to see Young Frankenstein on Broadway on Friday evening, May 16, and in depth sessions on Saturday and Sunday, May 17 and 18, at the NYU Tisch School of the Arts, 721 Broadway New York City.

The faculty includes Jonathan Deans, who designed the sound for Young Frankenstein, Peter Hylenski (Cry Baby), LORT experts Rob Milburn and Michael Bodeen, and Dan Moses Schreier (Gypsy). The BSMC also features technical sessions by Chris Hubbard of CH Sound Design, Henry Cohen of Production Radio Rentals, John Taylor of d&b Audiotechnik, Bob McCarthy of Meyer Sound, and Steve Sockey of SIA Acoustics.

Sound designer Abe Jacob, considered by many to be the "godfather" of contemporary sound design, serves as creative consultant to the BSMC. He got his start in San Francisco mixing sound for such 1960s rock stars as Jimi Hendrix, the Mamas and the Papas, and Peter Paul and Mary, and designed the sound system for the Monterey Pop Festival. A legendary sound designer for theatre and opera, a tireless champion of union representation for his fellow artisans, and a 2000 EDDY Award winner, Jacob designed the sound for such seminal Broadway shows as Jesus Christ Superstar, A Chorus Line, Pippin, Chicago, Cats, and Evita, virtually creating the position of sound designer in the process. In the past 15 years, Jacob has helped secure a charter for sound designers within IATSE (Local 922); and in 1993 he helped the Local achieve its first collective bargaining agreement with the League of American Theatres and Producers. In 1999, he helped merge the sound designers with IATSE Local One.

The BSMC also includes a manufacturer's showcase in the Abe Burrows Theatre at 721 Broadway, Tisch School of the Arts at NYU, on both Saturday and Sunday, along with networking opportunities and a cocktail party.

"What a show... Mingle with the Broadway folks. Great conversations. It's our first time for Clear-Com. Hard to imagine considering how long we've been at this intercom gig. Seeing the young and "older" at the Master Classes and the enthusiasm they bring made my weekend. More important, if you listen, even an old feller like me will learn something. The future is bright on Broadway. I know, I saw it at the Broadway Sound Master Classes!" says Ed Fitzgerald of Clear-Com, about the 2007 BSMC.
