Kinetic Lighting At 27th Annual College Television Awards

On March 19th, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Foundation (ATASF) presented its 27th Annual College Television Awards at Culver Studios. Kinetic Lighting, Inc. provided the technical production work for the event, which was hosted by Melissa Rivers and featured a bevy of celebrity presenters.

Mark Flaisher, of Mark Flaisher Entertainment produces the combined cocktail reception, dinner, and award show. "We wanted to create a rich looking and dignified award show to honor these talented award winners, so I hired Kinetic Lighting to produce all technical aspects of the show," says Flaisher. These components included lighting, video, audio, and technical direction. The production team had just weeks to design and produce the show.

The venue was crafted into four distinct areas using theatrical drapery: Reception, Green Room, Media Room, and Dinner/Awards Room. Guests entered the Reception through the same door used by Clark Gable and Vivian Leigh during the filming of Gone with the Wind.

In keeping with the historic theme, Kinetic weaved new lighting technology with vintage motion picture props. Lighting designer David Jacobi deployed bubble patterns combined with blue and green crushed glass gobos for a textured light effect on the Reception area floor.

Red carpet led to the Green Room, where celebrity presenters relaxed before entering onto stage. Here Jacobi used decorative lamps to bathe the white lounge furniture and bar in warm light. Fixtures rigged to the stage's catwalk provided additional pools of light.

In the Dinner Room, where the awards were presented, Kinetic's technical wizardry had the greatest impact. Two video screens flanked the stage for IMAG and to showcase the award-winning television programs. Kinetic provided 10,000-lumen projectors for this element.

Jacobi utilized LED technology and moving lights to achieve bold looks on stage. He relied heavily on Color Kinetics Color Blast 12 fixtures and Martin MAC 250 Entours, controlled by a High End Hog iPC console.

Two 12' EMMY statuettes bordered the stage, which were bathed in dramatic, color changing washes from the Color Blast 12 fixtures. Additional Color Blasts and the MAC 250s illuminated the stage cyc. "This combination gave me a lot of flexibility in creating stage looks," says Jacobi, adding, "we had seamless color changing, layered with moving graphics. The looks were very dramatic.”

Terri Clark, Executive Director of ATASF, was elated. "The night was a tremendous success," she says. "Everyone went above and beyond, and made the evening truly spectacular!"
