Bauhaus Barbie: Kylie Minogue's Kiss Me Once Tour

Kylie Minogue’s last world tour, Aphrodite – Les Folies, saw the Australian singer splash around the world with 11,000 gallons of water, delighting fans with a high-energy and high-tech extravaganza. For her current Kiss Me Once Tour, Minogue and show/creative director William Baker decided to strip back and streamline the show’s design. Celebrating Minogue and her music was at the forefront of Baker’s mind when planning the show. “I think the main thing I wanted to do with this tour was remind people how many great songs Kylie has in her back catalogue and show what a great pop star she is,” he says. “For me, Kylie is a pop star, and pop music is what she does best, joyous pop. So I wanted to remind the audience of that.”

With strict budget constraints, Baker decided to do something completely different from the last world tour by removing all the show gags and focusing on the music and visuals. “We couldn’t go bigger than Aphrodite. That had water fountains and the kitchen sink, so we went the other way and really stripped things back. I wanted something that was almost minimal in design but very art-directed, a show that was like the KYLIEFEVER2002 tour but 12 years later, like a sequel to that show,” he explains. “Then there is the Kiss Me Once album imagery, which is a huge concept for the show.”
