Deborah Warner’s production of Billy Budd realizes Benjamin Britten’s 1951 opera in Madrid for the first time. From the outset, her collaboration with set designer Michael Levine for the Teatro Real was guided by the need to create a space for 100 men sailing aboard the HMS Indomitable, including 30 actors added to flesh out the stresses of life on the warship.
