Sound Product Of The Year, Amplifier: d&b audiotechnik D80

The D80 amplifier is a high-power density amp designed for mobile and installation applications. Says one judge, "It is a beast: 2,000W into eight ohms per channel in two rack spaces, 30A power draw, built-in d&b Remote Ethernet Interface, analog or up to 96kHz AES inputs, NL4 and NL8 outputs." With configurations for all d&b loudspeakers and a linear mode, the signal delay capability enables user-definable settings of up to 10s (3,440m/11,286') to be applied independently to each channel. The same goes for the two 16-band EQs, with optional parametric, asymmetric, shelving, or notch filtering. "The concept is to tune the rig with the first 16 and make the second 16 available to road engineers so you can provide an end-user EQ within the native signal path," adds another judge. "It is meant to be the de facto choice for V-Series and J-Series arrays and most of the subs. It drives the V-Series to within 3dB of the J-Series. That’s loud."
