To raise money for the victims of the recent Tsunami tragedy, on January 29 a collection of Canada’s premier recording artists took the stage in Vancouver for Concert For Tsunami Relief. The concert’s headliners included Sarah McLachlan, Avril Lavigne, Barenaked Ladies, Sum 41, Chantal Kreviazuk, and Delerium.
An equally impressive group of lighting designers, including concert designers Graeme Nicol, Brent Lipp, Dan Maynard and AJ Pen, and television designers Jean Renaud and Vincent Colbert, supported the musical acts.
Given the time constraints of the venue and the number of designers involved, it was decided that using WYSIWYG would be advantageous for pre-programming off-site. To facilitate this, Electric Aura was brought on board to collate all the plots from the various designers and to get them WYG ready. Electric Aura donated the use of their WYSIWYG suite for the set up and programming of the consoles and sent out their portable system to GM Place so more than one designer could program on site at a time. This helped to maximize the LDs’ time at the venue.
Graeme Nicol, LD for Sarah McLachlan, took full advantage of the WYSIWYG time available. "I was able to load the disk from our current tour into the grandMA and work through all the patch changes before we even loaded in," explains Graeme. "There were some major fixture type differences, and the extra programming time allowed me to preserve the look and integrity of the original cues."
