Media maker and interactive system designer, Matthew Ragan, recently contributed to the design and implementation of the media in the WonderDome, Before You Ruin It, Asylum, The Fall of the House of Escher, Neuro, X-Act: Commons, Half-Way House, Sparrow Song, ¡Bocón!, Mantarraya, Terra Tractus, and rjVOID. He’s also on a research team at Arizona State University called the Ars Robotica Project. “In working on live-controlling robotics with a gesture control, I've spent a hefty chunk of time developing a tool to capture, filter, and save a table of joint data coming out of Kinect V2. It's been a challenging process to think about how to approach this as efficiently as possible in the programming, while also building an interface and visualization tool that helps the user see exactly what they're recording at any given moment.”

Ragan makes his LDI speaker debut teaching the full-day Projection 101 course - a perfect introduction to projection design and technology as well as a gateway to the Projection Master Classes at LDI. “Projection 101 requires that we take some time to really peel apart the fundamentals of the topic of projection itself,” notes Ragan. “Like many disciplines, video and projection design often seems like a discrete skill at first glance. It's only when we start to closely examine the field that we can discover the constellation of skills and topics that we need to understand in order to really get a handle on working with projection for live performance. From the mathematics of throw distance and human visual acuity, to the fundamental approaches to building and cueing content, we'll demystify the process from start to finish, and give participants opportunities to ask questions along the way.”
