City Theatrical’s Multiverse® Studio Wireless DMX/RDM at the CBS original television series The Unicorn

City Theatrical’s Multiverse® Studio Kit, a wireless DMX solution for film & video projects, was recently used to provide wireless DMX/RDM for Season II of the CBS original television series The Unicorn. Long battery life, dual band operation, contactless charging, and rating for outdoor use are among the features of this new wireless DMX technology that were used during shooting.

“If I could, everything would come in and be attached to a Multiverse Studio Receiver,” said Justin Stroh, the Chief Lighting Technician for The Unicorn. “With the interactive screen on the device, I can see the radio signal, universe, and everything I need to know if I need to assess something quickly. All of that control at the electrician’s level has been a gamechanger.”

Chief Lighting Technician Justin Stroh first became aware of Multiverse wireless DMX/RDM technology in 2019, from a demonstration at Cine Gear Expo, a film trade show on the Paramount Studios lot in Los Angeles. With prior experience using existing wireless DMX technologies for television and film projects, Justin and his team were looking for wireless DMX solutions that offered reliable functionality with greater usability, making products easier to deal with and use on set. Upon testing this new technology, they decided to use it on The Unicorn, and first began using Multiverse wireless DMX/RDM technology during the first season of shooting. For Season II, they implemented the new battery powered Multiverse Studio Kit with contactless charging, which includes six Multiverse Studio Receivers.

Each Multiverse Studio Receiver brings the advanced features of the Multiverse wireless DMX/RDM system to the film and video world with fast setup and reliability. It contains a long-life lithium-ion polymer battery giving 20 hours of use, and its full four button user interface with a backlit LED display makes setup easy and gives feedback on system performance. Each Multiverse Studio Receiver includes a DMX corded connector, which allows the external antenna to hang below the lighting fixture, giving improved data fidelity. At The Unicorn, the lighting team was able to plan their broadcast using a RadioScan™ Spectrum Analyzer as a frequency scanner, and set universes on each receiver from their smartphones using City Theatrical’s DMXcat® app, which allowed them to switch their setups from anywhere on set.

Multi award-winning Multiverse wireless DMX/RDM technology allows lighting users to broadcast as many as ten universes of DMX data from a single transmitter, while producing less radio energy than present-day single universe systems. The 900MHz band is licensed for use in North America only.
