Lectrosonics TM400 Wireless System

Lectrosonics introduced the TM400, a new wireless system designed for sound system test and measurement. This system uses Lectrosonics' Digital Hybrid™ technology to encode the audio signal into a 24-bit digital data stream, and then transmits this signal via a proprietary coding method over an analog FM UHF carrier. This approach avoids the use of an analog compander while maintaining frequency response of 30Hz to 20kHz ± 1dB and a signal to noise ratio of 107dB. By using the analog UHF transmission scheme and high RF power, the TM400 provides extended range and dropout-free audio. The TM400 system consists of the UH400 100mW plug-on transmitter, which is capable of providing phantom power for use with any standard calibration microphone; the R400 receiver; and a waterproof carrying case. With this system, no additional specialized cables or external phantom power supplies are required. Initially, Lectrosonics will be delivering the TM400 system in two frequency blocks (563.200-588.700MHz, and 691.200-716.700) with each block providing 256 selectable frequencies.

Wireworks DMX Cord Assemblies

Wireworks DMX cord assemblies are manufactured to ensure that the signal reaches each instrument without interference or degradation. They are available with either 5- or 3-pin Neutrik XLR male and female connectors. The cable itself is crucial to superior data transmission. Wireworks DMX cable exceeds the specifications of USITT DMX512-1990. Two stranded tinned copper 24-gauge pairs insulated with cellular poly-propylene yield a low 12.5-pico farads capacitance per foot, providing clear data flow. They are then shielded with 100% coverage polyester aluminum foil and a second 65% braided tinned copper shield. A PVC install jacket provides all the protection needed for every day use in harsh environments. Further, for ultimate flexibility, Wireworks introduced the New DMX3F and DMX5F control cables with a matte black cable designed for flexibility without compromise in temporary installations. All Wireworks products are warranted against defects in parts and workmanship for the life of the product.

L-Acoustics KUDO Line Array

The L-Acoustics' KUDO is a new generation of line source array offering far more flexibility and possibilities. Benefiting from over a decade's worth of R&D efforts, KUDO represents a significant evolution in L-Acoustics' pioneering Wavefront Sculpture Technology® (WST) since WST can now be performed on both the vertical and horizontal planes. Two patented DOSC waveguides are incorporated within KUDO, allowing WST to be performed either vertically or horizontally. When flown or hung in parallel, KUDO's coverage pattern may be modified on the perpendicular axis using L-Acoustics' patent-pending K-Louver technology. Mechanically adjustable K-Louvers provide directivity control for the mid/high section and allow KUDO to be reconfigured with four different coverage pattern settings. KUDO is primarily intended for regional touring and corporate sound reinforcement as well as high-performance fixed installation in theatres, concert halls, houses of worship, sports facilities, clubs, convention centers, hotel ballrooms, theme parks or arenas. As a full-range, three-way system, KUDO can be used for corporate, classical or theatrical sound reinforcement without subwoofers due to its exceptional low-end performance. For touring applications, the addition of L-Acoustics subwoofers (SB118 or SB218) is recommended. KUDO combines the functions of a variable-curvature vertical line source array (like V-DOSC®) and a constant-curvature horizontal line source array (like ARCS®). When used vertically as a variable curvature line source array with inter-enclosure angles of 0° to 10° at 1° resolution, the horizontal directivity can be configured as: 50° (symmetric); 110° (symmetric); 25°×55° (asymmetric) or 55°×25° (asymmetric). Within the same vertical line source array, individual enclosures can be configured with different horizontal directivity depending on the shape, width and reverberation properties of the venue, making KUDO extremely flexible with respect to audience geometry matching. KUDO has a truncated trapezoidal shape with trapezoidal angles of five degrees on top and bottom. Dimensions are 34.5" (87.6cm) wide by 14" (35.6cm) high by 27.1" (68.9cm) deep, and the enclosure weighs 191.4lbs. (87kg).

Grace Distribution Pin Mic

The Pin Mic is a new lavalier mike that comes standard in a handy case with an “interior” or “exterior” version capsule mike and one backplate and one sleeve. There are two longer pin length backplates available for thicker wardrobe, but the standard length is fine for most uses. Extra sleeves are available for gluing a button, logo, brooch, etc. over the capsule. You can order the kit with both the interior and exterior capsules. The “exterior” capsule has a permanent mesh over it, which makes it slightly larger, but great for interviews where the mike can be exposed to camera view. It is better with wind than the “interior” version, but still would need windscreens when there is a breeze. There is also a Dual Pin Mic available when two separate mikes with two separate connectors are needed. There are various windscreens and soon to be a pin mike, a tie clip mike, and much more coming.

DPA Microphones Inc. DPA 4088 Headband Mike

DPA Microphones Inc. debuted its cardioid headband microphone, the DPA 4088, at AES 2004 in San Francisco. The 4088 is ideal for live performances requiring high stage volumes and provides a secure and comfortable fit allowing complete freedom of movement. The 4088 was developed in response to demand from customers who perceived a gap in the market for a high-quality, extremely discrete cardioid headband microphone. Sound engineers will now experience a head worn mike that does not need an EQ mark-up to sound tolerable. The high quality of the microphone ensures that you will hear only the sound of the voice right away — not the microphone or background noise. The capsule is a pre-polarized first order pressure gradient transducer, hidden in a small and lightweight housing with dimensions just slightly larger than DPA's omni capsules. The low frequency response is designed for optimal linearity at 1" to 1.5" distance from the sound source. The result is a bass roll-off that will be prominent at a small distance (in practice no response under 1kHz at only 20"), which is paramount to reject background noise and to avoid feedback.

LIGHTING

Artistic Licence Visual-Patch Jump-Start Programmer

At LDI 2004, Artistic Licence showed the newly released Visual-Patch, Jump-Start programmer. Visual-Patch combines the power of the new RDM protocol, a lighting console, and a video camera. Point the camera at the stage and press the Visual-Patch button: the lighting console uses the RDM to switch on each lamp in turn. Then it analyzes the position, shape, and size of the lamp using the video camera, adds it to the patch and automatically sets the lamp start address. The first product to implement Visual-Patch is Colour-Tramp, a lighting console that is optimized for control of two- or three-dimensional arrays of color changers. Visual-Patch allows large arrays of pixels to be mapped and patched with ease; this benefits random pixel arrangements such as “video on star cloth” applications. Artistic Licence's Jump-Start is a small hand-held RDM and DMX512 programmer. Plug the Jump-Start into the DMX connector to view and edit important information and settings such as Start Address, Footprint, Sensors, Temperature, or Voltage. Jump-Start even gives users the ability to plug into the entire lighting rig and auto-patch all of the lights. The programmer can also ask the light to strike or dowse or self-test. It operates as a straightforward DMX tester. Users can set individual channels to a level or have them ramp continuously and can store channel settings to memory. The programmer is powered by two AA batteries, powering 12 hours of talk time and six months of standby time.
