Legendary sound specialist Abe Jacob, the creative consultant for the Broadway Sound Master Classes (BSMC), has announced a line-up of leading sound designers who will participate on the faculty this year. The fourth annual edition of the BSMC will kick off on Friday evening May 19 with a performance of the new musical, The Drowsy Chaperone, with sound design by Acme Sound Partners. The classes will take place on Saturday and Sunday, May 20 & 21 in Burrows Theatre at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, 721 Broadway, New York City.
Creative consultant Abe Jacob was a seminal sound designer in the 1970s, when he worked on the original productions of Hair and Jesus Christ Superstar. His numerous sound design credits include Pippin’, The Rocky Horror Show, A Chorus Line, Beatlemania, Dancin’, and Les Misérables.
This year’s BSMC faculty includes Tom Clark and Nevin Steinberg of Acme Sound Partners, whose credits include The Drowsy Chaperone, Hot Feet, Light In The Piazza, Spamalot, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and The Boy From Oz; Steve Kennedy, designer of sound for numerous hit musicals including Jersey Boys, Hairspray, The Producers, Aida, Titanic, and Big; John Shivers who has designed the sound for Tarzon and In My Life, and served as associate designer on numerous shows including Hairspray, The Producers, and Aida; Peter Hylenski whose sound design credits include The Wedding Singer, Sweet Charity (revival), Jackie Mason Freshly Squeezed, Little Women; and Jon Weston, sound designer for a long list of shows including The Color Purple, Caroline, or Change, Nine (revival), Thoroughly Modern Millie, and Bring In ‘Da Noise, Bring In ‘Da Funk.
In addition to these leading Broadway sound designers, sessions will include Steve Bush and Todd Meier of Meyer Sound on the Fundamentals of System Design and Optimization; David Bullard on the Implementation of Sound Effects in the Venue; and Rick Thomas, professor of sound design, Purdue University, who will discuss "What's Being Taught About Sound Design in the University."
