World Stage Design in Toronto, March 12-19, 2005

The first World Stage Design will be held March 12-19, 2005, in the Canadian Hall at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The exhibition and catalog of set, costume, lighting, and sound design will present work from designers around the world. An international jury selected 188 works from a total of 951 submissions to be presented in the gallery exhibition.

The selected pieces represent designers from 35 of the 43 nations participating. All the submitted designs will be presented in the digital exhibit section and included in the print and digital catalogs available for sale at the event.

The exhibition is co-produced by three prominent theatre associations: United States Institute for Theatre Technology, Inc. (USITT), Canadian Institute for Theatre Technology/l’Institut Canadien des Technologies Scenographiques (CITT), and International Organization of Scenographers, Theatre Architects and Technicians (OISTAT).

Generous companies, foundations, and individuals are also lending support by sponsoring the award medals that will be presented to the premiere designs in the gallery exhibition. A second jury has been established to select the medal-winning designs.

Gold Medals sponsors are: Rose Brand Theatrical Fabrics, Fabrications & Supplies for Set Design; Rit Dye, Phoenix Brands LLC for Costume Design; Tom Watson for Lighting Design; and Stage Research, Inc. for Sound Design.

Silver Medals sponsors are: Tom Watson, Set Design; USITT, Inc., Costume Design; OISTAT, Lighting Design; and Engineering Harmonics, Inc., Sound Design. The Tobin Foundations for Theatre Arts is sponsoring the Bronze Medals for both Set and Costume Design. MDG Fog Generators is sponsoring the Bronze Medal in Lighting Design and CITT is supporting the Bronze for Sound Design.

Admission to the exhibition is free all seven days it is open. The exhibition coincides with the USITT Annual Conference & Stage Expo which is being held March 16-19 in the Metro Toronto Convention Centre and the OISTAT World Congress which is being held March 13-15 at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel. The Royal York is located at 100 Front Street West in downtown Toronto. The Convention Centre is located a few blocks down Front Street, within walking distance of the Fairmont Royal York.
