VLPS Supplies the 2003 Brit Awards

VLPS Lighting Services Ltd (formally Vari-Lite Europe Ltd) are supporting The Brit Awards, the famous music awards event, for the seventh year running.

On Monday, January 13th, Abbey Road Studios were the spot where the nominees for each category were announced. They include, The Sugababes, Ms Dynamite, Coldplay, Mike Skinner of The Street, Will Young, Pink, Gareth Gates, Craig David, Sophie Ellis Bexter, Liberty X, and Blue. New categories were also announced including Best British Urban Act, voted by MTV-Base viewers and Breakthrough Act, voted by Radio One listeners. In addition,Tom Jones will be awarded the Outstanding Contribution to the Music Industry’ award.

VLPS are supplying an extensive amount of equipment. Lighting designer Al Gurdon specified a rig consisting of 65 VL6C™, 140 VL2C™ spot luminaires, 160 VL5™, 85 VL5Arc™, and 28 VL2416™ wash luminaires, plus 10 VL1000™ Arc luminaires and 18 VL1000™ Tungsten luminaires. An array of conventional lighting is also being used, such as 6 Lamp bars, ETC Source 4s, Howie Battens, Strand Coda Floods, Strand Minuette Fresnels, along with thousands of metres of cable, mains, and nearly 1,500' of truss. Followspots include four 3K Strong Gladiators and two 2K Strong Supertroupers.

Programmer Mike ‘Oz’ Owen is running the show from a Virtuoso™ control console, and Rich Gorrod is Crew Chief. MJK Productions of London are once again handling the event headed up by the talents of production manager Mick Kluczynski.

The Brit Awards will take place on Thursday 20th February at London’s Earls Court 1. For the first time in 13 years the awards it will be broadcast ‘as live’ on ITV1 at 9pm, instead of pre-recording the ceremony and showing it 24 hours later.
