USITT's Golden Pen Award Winner Selected

A representation of the work of Miodrag Tabacki has been named the winner of USITT’s 2006 Golden Pen Award. USITT presents the Golden Pen Award annually as part of its commitment to honor the best in theatre design and technology. The book, entitled Miodrag Tabacki, was authored by Gordana Popovic Vasic amd Irina Subotic and published by Clio in Belgrade, making it a challenge to obtain in the US. USITT has imported a limited number of the books and made them available through its website bookstore at www.usitt.org. A list of past Golden Pen winners can also be found on the site.

Members of USITT's Golden Pen committee noted that the work surpassed the other nominations in meeting the criteria for the award. Each year, the committee considers nominated books that are significant in the field of performing arts including the presentation of work and methodology of exceptional practitioners for theatrical arts and/or crafts.

Tabacki's work both in Europe and the US has drawn critical acclaim and honors. He is currently a visiting Fulbright Scholar at the University of Minnesota, and has had work exhibited as part of World Stage Design 2005. Miodrag Tabacki includes parallel essays in both English and Serbo-Croatian, highlighting the relationships in Tabacki's work. USITT hopes to have a supply of the design monograph available for purchase at the USITT Boutique at the Annual Conference & Stage Expo to be held March 29 to April 1, 2006 in Louisville, KY.

As part of the Conference, Tabacki will sign copies of the book and participate in special session discussing his designs. Tabacki will accept the 2006 Golden Pen on behalf of the authors as part of the Annual Awards Banquet that concludes the Conference.
