Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL)
, the largest safety testing and conformity assessment organization in North America, announced the appointment of Ted V. Hall as its new vice president and chief technical officer effective Jan. 28, 2002.
As CTO, Mr. Hall will be responsible for all UL engineering and technical activities worldwide, including; initiating technology improvements; developing and implementing consistent, state-of-the-art testing and instrumentation policies, practices and procedures across all technical operations; leading national and international standards activities; leading internal and external accreditation activities; expanding research and development; and, developing and implementing technical quality programs to solidify UL's position as a leading provider of conformity assessment services.

Immediately prior to accepting the position as UL's CTO, Mr. Hall worked for nearly 10 years at Motorola Inc.'s Austin, Texas, location that specializes in semiconductor product development. While at Motorola, Mr. Hall held director positions in the following areas: manufacturing, strategic programs, product development, product engineering and product operation, and managed several hundred engineering staff. Prior to Motorola, Mr. Hall worked for IBM's information products division in Lexington, Ky., leading teams of engineers responsible for product technology development. Mr. Hall received a bachelor of science degree in mathematics from Grambling State University, and a master of science degree in applied mathematics with computer science emphasis from the University of Kentucky.
