Steve Lieberman Lights Arc Music Festival In Chicago

Day 11 of Live Design's '12 Plots Of Christmas' takes us into the world of the mega music festivals with legendary lighting designer Steve Lieberman of SJ Lighting.

Held on September 1-3, 2023 in Union Park, Chicago, the second year of the Arc Festival celebrated house music in the city where it was born with an amazing display of lights and lasers designed by Lieberman for the 909 stage. A festival produced by Auris Presents, creators of unique, immersive, and interactive live music experiences.

Lieberman's bold use of saturated colors adds to the visual intensity of the lighting. His approach is unique and he has been quoted as saying: "I get a lot of influence from architects rather than lighting designers, mainly because of the influence of permanent structures throughout history. Zaha Hadid, God rest her soul, is one of the most creative people since the dawn of design. Her stuff is fascinating to me, but I also like the retro-futurism of American architects like John Lautner. Of course, there is a plethora of visual influences, but most of my design aesthetic and philosophies came from architecture." The architecture of his massive festival rigs, from Coachella to Electric Daisy Carnival (to name just two) certainly echoes this sentiment.
