Sabedra Elected President Of IES, NY Section

Award-winning lighting designer Randy Sabedra has been elected president of the Illuminating Engineering Society New York Section (IESNY) for a two-year term.

He has held various positions at the IESNY since 2002, most recently serving as the organization’s vice president and co-chair of the IESNY Education Committee and advisor on the Student Lighting Design Competition.

Sabedra has over fifteen years of professional interior and exterior architectural lighting design experience and currently heads his own firm, RS Lighting Design. In addition, he is a lighting instructor in the Masters Lighting Design and Architecture Programs at Parsons School of Design, and a lighting instructor in the Interior Design Department at the Fashion Institute of Technology.

He earned his Bachelor of Architecture from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, CA and studied subsurface architecture at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Fontainebleau, France. He began his career at the lighting design firms of H. M. Brandston & Partners and Kugler Tillotson Associates, where he was the lead designer on a wide variety of projects and co-received an IALD Award of Excellence in 1991 for the Bulgari Jewelry Store in New York and was part of the design team that won an IES Lumen Award in 2003 for the Schlumberger Offices in New York, among others.

"During my term as president, the IESNY will celebrate its Centennial," says Sabedra. "It will be especially gratifying to lead the section as it enters its second century, and we reflect upon the past achievements of the lighting design community in New York City and determine what short and long-term goals need to be on the boards going forward."

Bonny Ann Whitehouse, Whitehouse Lighting Design, LLC succeeds Sabedra as vice president; Tracy Kain of Specialty Lighting Industries and Wendy Kaplan of Vossloh Schwabe were elected to the positions of treasurer and secretary respectively.
