Special Report

FILM

Chicago
One of Broadway’s biggest musical hits comes to the screen, after years of false starts and dead ends. Rob Marshall’s film features a high-wattage cast and a daring concept in which the strikingly theatrical lighting by Jules Fisher and Peggy Eisenhauer plays a major role. The DP is Dion Beebe. Vari-Lite and MA Lighting are but two of the companies involved. John Calhoun visits the film’s Toronto set for his in-depth report.

CONCERTS

Bruce Springsteen
New Jersey’s gift to rock music is back, with a triumphant tour tied to his new album, The Rising. Jeff Ravitz revisits his long-term partnership with Springsteen. The lineup includes equipment from Morpheus, Martin, Syncrolite, Altman, ETC, Lycian, and Avolites control. Sharon Stancavage reports.

TV/CONCERTS

American Idol
The show that gripped the nation last summer goes out on tour. While Kelly Clarkson sings and Simon Cowell snipes, Kieran Healy provides the lighting for the latest in reality programming. Includes equipment from Vari-Lite, Strong, Lycian, Robert Juliat, and Reel EFX.

PROFILE
Peter Maradudin—an LD becomes a producer. One of the top theatre LDs on the West Coast offers some penetrating insights about the dilemmas of building a career in regional theatre, and discusses his new plans—among them, to produce a musical version of The Count of Monte Cristo.

SPECIAL EVENT
Fashion Week in New York. Bernhard-Link Theatrical designs lighting for dozens of fashion shows every season, plus many other events surrounding the scene. LD Gordon Link specified Vari*Lite® VL1000s™ and ETC Source Fours for the Celeste Bartos Forum in the New York Public Library, one of the three main runway venues.

TRADE SHOW REPORT
LDI: What was new? What was hot? What won an award? Where were the parties? Our staff hits the trade show floor in Vegas and comes back telling all.

CLUB
Sound Bar. Chicago’s latest nightspot, designed by Slick Design and Manufacturing, features equipment from High End Systems, Elation, Coemar, and Martin Professional.
