As part of our series showcasing plots from theatre and concerts, Chase Hall shared his lighting plot and gear list. Hall and ChaseLights Studio have worked on events from award shows to music festivals and worldwide music tours including Kane Brown.
Live Design: What first attracted you to live design (lighting and scenic) as a career?
Chase Hall: My family gifted me PAR cans and a fog machine at five years old. And then being a weird lighting freak of a kid I did computerized Christmas lighting displays as a high schooler in South Carolina. I transitioned into designing local theater easily after that. And, of course, I’ve been hooked on the drug that is production design, ever since.
LD: What appealed to you about doing the recent Kane Brown tour?
CH: This is my first foray into the country music space and I’ve had so much fun. I was hesitant, because I grew up in a South Carolina community where country tours meant state fairs - wooden surfaces/blinders/hay bales/trucks/organics - dated aesthetics. Alex, the creative director, really sold me on designing Kane like a modern pop tour and bringing some fresh looks and tricks to the show. Screen content, pyro, lasers, automated staging and even the musical arrangements were all driven by the initial decisions of the design being a “portal” of tricks. With a *giant* array of crowd fixtures that make the arena feel more like a nightclub than a dark room of spectators.
I’ve been very grateful to Kane and his team for being willing to tour a challenge. And Kane’s a total daredevil and treated it like his personal playground. It’s a blast of a show to watch.
LD: What were some of the technical challenges on this tour?
CH: Fuse was willing to make some custom brackets and solutions for my portal design desires. The bespoke fixture hang solutions for the grouped linear strobes and flown performer catwalks, along with custom fog juice - all worked to make this one special.
