The Kodak Theatre looked great on the TV screen, Cirque du Soleil frolicked onstage and over the crowd for the Best Visual Effects segment, and the ceremony still took too long. Besides Cirque's acrobatic contribution to the ceremonies, highlights of the March 24-25 Academy Awards® broadcast included a tribute to New York in the movies prepared by Nora Ephron and introduced by Woody Allen; a collage of documentaries compiled by filmmaker Penelope Spheeris, a moment of silence for the victims of 9/11 invoked by Kevin Spacey; and finally, finally, a win by eternal nominee (16!) Randy Newman, the Susan Lucci of the Academy Awards, whose "If I Didn't Have You," for Monsters, Inc., won Best Original Song.
In the categories near and dear to EDand LD readers' hearts; Aussies (Moulin Rouge) and New Zealanders (Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring) took most of the design statuettes home, but Americans prevailed in the Best Picture (A Beautiful Mind) and Best Director (Ron Howard for A Beautiful Mind) categories.
