Ever wondered how many kilometers of cable it takes to put on the Eurovision live broadcasts? How many technical and design professionals? How many light fixtures and speakers? How many disposable water bottles? Just kidding - there were no disposable water bottles on this production, even the glitter was sustainable!
Every year the music spectacular has the usual mix of musical styles, judging upsets, and scandals that enthrall 200 million viewers from more than 40 countries over the three days of the competition. But somehow, even as the spectacle gets bigger and the gimmicks and shock-value acts (looking at you, naked performer Teemu Keisteri from Finland) become more outrageous, the show still has that rock concert excitement.
Show technical director Ola Melzig is a veteran of multiple contests and was right at home for Eurovision 2024, as Malmo Sweden is his hometown. His gear list and fun facts give some idea of how the biggest show in live entertainment gets off the ground, check them out below and stay tuned for Live Design's interview with lighting and screens designer Fredrik Stormby of Green Wall Designs.
