Meet the 2004 BSMC Presenters

Abe Jacob, creative consultant for the Broadway Sound Master Classes, is also known as the "Godfather of Theater Sound Design." He has not only mentored several generations of talented sound desginers, he also continues to design on a very active basis and remains the in-house sound guru at New York City Ballet and Opera. Jacob got his start in San Francisco mixing sound for such 1960s rock stars as Jimi Hendrix, the Mamas and the Papas, and Peter, Paul, and Mary, and designed the sound system for the Monterey Pop Festival. His credits range from Jesus Christ Superstar, A Chorus Line, and Pippin to Chicago, Cats, to Evita, and Beatlemania. Jacob was the audio go-to guy for these and other seminal Broadway shows, virtually creating the position of sound designer in the process. In the past 15 years, Jacob has helped secure a charter for sound designers within IATSE (Local 922) and in 1993 he helped the Local achieve its first collective bargaining agreement with the League of American Theaters and Producers. In 1999 he helped merge the sound designers with Local One.

John Kilgore is a sound designer, recording engineer, and composer. His sound designs for theater include numerous designs for the Manhattan Theatre Club, Soho Rep, and the La Jolla Playhouse among others. His sound design for the LA production of Love! Valour! Compassion! was nominated for an Ovation Award. John has served as Director of Recording Services for Masque Sound & Recording since 1986. Kilgore’s recent recording credits include every work by Steve Reich since The Cave, as well as new recordings of Music for 18 Musicians (1999 Grammy Award), New York Counterpoint, Four Organs and Eight Lines, Triple Quartet with the Kronos Quartet, and the DVD of Three Tales. He has recorded Dexter Gordon, James Moody, Woody Shaw, Gil Evans' Orchestra, Big Mama Thornton, The Brooklyn Philharmonic, DNA, Julius Baker, Richard Goode, The Empire Brass Quintet, and Ervin Nyiregyhazi to name just a few. He has been resident composer for Pooh Kaye's Eccentric Motions Dance Company since 1983, and has provided scores for many pieces, as well as Ms. Kaye's films such as Sticks on the Move and Swept Up. He was composer, behind-the-scenes performer, and musical director for Len Jenkin's Dream Express.

Tony Meola won the 1998 Drama Desk Award for The Lion King. Most recently he has worked on the Tony-nominated Wicked, Man of La Mancha, and Sweet Smell of Success. His career has taken him on Broadway and Off, to the West End, and on International Tours. Meola’s Broadway shows include High Society, The Sound of Music, The Last Night of Ballyhoo, Juan Darien, Steel Pier, Forum, The King and I, Company, Chronicle of a Death Foretold, Moon Over Buffalo, Smokey Joe's Cafe,Face Value, Guys and Dolls, A Month in the Country, A Christmas Carol, Five Guys Named Moe, She Loves Me, Whorehouse Goes Public, The Red Shoes, Anything Goes, and A Grand Night for Singing. His work Off Broadway was heard in Love, Janis; A New Brain; Violet; Durang, Durang; Pecadillo; Groucho. West End shows include Anything Goes and Smokey Joe’s Café. His international tours include Driving Miss Daisy, Les Misérables, and Mozart!.

Dan Moses Schreier' s sound design can currently be seen in Assassins, for which he won the 2004 Drama Desk Award for sound design. In 2003, he received an EDDY Award for Sustained Excellence. Other awards include the 2004 L.A. Ovation Award for his work on August Wilson's new play Gem of the Ocean, two Drama Desk Awards (Floyd Collins and Into The Woods), and an Obie Award for Sustained Excellence. Schreier's worked on Broadway in Anna in the Tropics; Into the Woods; Topdog/Underdog; Dirty Blonde; Amour; Dance of Death; Major Barbara; The Ride Down to Mt. Morgan; The Diary of Anne Frank; The Tempest; Bring in 'da Noise, Bring in 'da Funk; The Government Inspector, and Hedda Gabler. Off Broadway productions include Homebody/Kabul, Radiant Baby, Spinning Into Butter, Far East, Floyd Colilns, Spic-O-Rama, and God's Heart among others. As a composer, Schreier wrote the music for Broadway productions Dance of Death, George C. Wolfe's The Tempest (co-composed with Carlos Valdez), and Major Barbara, and the music/theatre piece The Shoulder.

John Weston is a sound designer with extensive work on and Off Broadway. He most recently worked on the Broadway Master Class feature musical Caroline, or Change. His Broadway credits include Nine; Imaginary Friends; Thoroughly Modern Millie; The Green Bird; It Ain't Nothin' but the Blues; On the Town; Bring in 'da Noise, Bring in 'da Funk; Company in concert at Lincoln Center; and Man of La Mancha. Off Broadway he has worked on The Thing About Men; Something Old, Something New; The Castle; tick, tickSBOOM!; The Bubbly Black GirlS; Bright Lights, Big City; Blue Man Group.

Meet the Sound Operators Panel:

Sound designer Kai Harada attended Yale University for two years before leaving to pursue a career in theatrical sound design. As associate to sound designer Tony Meola, he has worked on such projects as A Christmas Carol; The Sound of Music; High Society; Disney’s Der Glöckner von Notre Dame; Kiss Me, Kate; Sweet Smell of Success; Man of La Mancha; and most recently, Wicked. Off-Broadway, he has designed at HERE and the Ohio Theatre, and most recently he designed the world premiere of the new musical Norman’s Ark in the summer of 2002.

A graduate of SUNY Binghamton, production soundman Jordan Pankin has been involved with numerous Broadway productions such as She Loves Me, Forum, Best Little Whorehouse Goes Public, Sound of Music, Steel Pier, A Christmas Carol, Kiss Me Kate, Man of LaMancha, Sweet Smell of Success, Bombay Dreams, Lion King, Jelly's Last Jam, Nine, Moon Over Buffalo, and Coppenhagen. His touring productions include Sophisticated Ladies, Grand Hotel, JCSS, Busker Alley,Annie Warbucks, and Les Misérables. Jordan lives in New Jersey with his wife Nita and son Jacob.

Jim van Bergen's sound designs have toured five continents with productions cities as far-ranging as Hong Kong, Johannesburg, Cairo, and Vienna. His clients include His Holiness Pope John Paul II, the Metropolitan Opera, NY Philharmonic, Martha Graham Dance, Blue Man Group (Chicago Company), Busch Gardens Theme Park, and the Big Apple Circus. Jim recorded and mixed the classical award-winning children’s DVD The Orchestra- A Happy Family by the Little Orchestra Society. He has taught sound design at Yale School of Drama, North Carolina School of the Arts, Vassar College, Muhlenberg College, and was a sound specialty lecturer at AES, LDI, USITT. He currently serves as the Vice Commissioner, Broadway Sound Liason for USITT. He also performs project development and consulting for AKG, Audix, Earthworks, JBL, Mackie, Meyer, Shure, Trident, & TurboSound. Jim shares his busy, bizarre life with television/stage director Annette Jolles. He considers daughters Hannah (5) and Emma (3) his finest, most important works to date.
