Live Design TV Lighting Master Classes Schedule Announced

Creative consultant, Emmy Award-winning lighting designer Jeff Ravitz has announced a very exciting line-up for the second annual TV Live Design Lighting Master Classes, with a great line-up of speakers including Christian Hibbard from Jimmy Kimmel Live, the legenday Bill Klages, technical guru Mark Sanford, plus sitcom master Alan Walker and Craig M. Housenick (The Voice), among others. This year's schedule kicks off with a tour of the Jimmy Kimmel studios, recently converted to LED lighting, so get on board for a trip to Hollywood as well as a day and a half of sessions at USC. Based on the success of the inaugural TV Lighting Master Classes, this second go-round should be even better.

Thursday, December 5:

9:00am: Registration at USC

10:00am: Bus to Hollywood

11:00am-12:30pm: TOUR JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE: Christian Hibbard, the Emmy-nominated lighting designer of the hit ABC late-night show, Jimmy Kimmel Live, conducts a backstage tour of the show’s Hollywood studios, recently converted to LED.

12:30pm-1:00pm: Travel back to USC

1:00pm-2:30pm: Lunch and Manufacturer’s Showcase

2:30pm-3:00pm: INTRODUCTORY REMARKS, BASIC THEORIES: Jeff Ravitz welcomes everyone with an overview of TV lighting and where it intersects, or departs, from any other lighting.

3:00pm-3:15pm: Break

3:15pm-4:45pm: TELEVISION TECHNOLOGY: Highly respected experts and multi-Emmy winners both, lighting designer Bill Klages and video control engineer, Mark Sanford, talk about how the science of lighting for the camera allows for the art of lighting for the camera. If they don't know it, nobody does.

4:45pm-5:00pm: Break

5:00-6:00pm:   MUSIC AND DANCE COMPETITION PROGRAMS: The lighting team from The Voice: Craig M. Housenick, Daniel K.Boland, Johnny Bradley, (and depending availability) Oscar Dominguez talk about the techniques and challenges of lighting a weekly show that's chock full of one production number after another, and broadcast live!

9:00am-10:30am:  DEMO: COLOR TEMP, EXPOSURE, CAMERAS: Our experts, Bill Klages and Mark Sanford, follow up their technology session by showing exactly how the camera reacts to our lighting and why. Camera support by Sony:HSC Series HD/SD System Camera. 

10:30am-10:45am: Break

10:45am-12:15pm LIGHTING FOR SITCOMS: Sitcoms are like mini movies except they use three or more cameras at once and it has to look great from all angles. Alan Walker, a master of the genre talks about the techniques and philosophies that guide his designs.

12:15pm-2:15pm: Lunch and Manufacturer’s Showcase

2:15-3:45pm: TALK SHOWS: Jimmy Kimmel Live: LD Christian Hibbard follows up his studio tour with a detailed discussion of the process of lighting a daily talk show. Plus Travis Hagenbuch on the lighting of Queen Latifah's new talk show. 

3:45-4:00pm: Break

4:00-5:30pm: AWARDS SHOWS AND GALAS: Bob Barnhart, Emmy Award-winning designer and partner in the design firm, Full Flood, explains their successful methodogy for creating high-quality entertainment TV lighting for broadcasts watched worldwide by, literally, billions.
