German architectural lighting designer Gerd Pfarré IALD, of lighting design in Munich, has something very special up his sleeve for Lightfair International 2003. On Tuesday, May 6, he will present NightLight 2003, The Celebration of Lighting Design!, from 6:00pm at Boylan Studios, 601 W 26th Street, 14th floor, New York, NY 10001.
This event is the second in the NightLight series. "In February 2002, I had the idea of organizing an event parallel to our regular lighting fairs, which tend to be on the sober side," says Pfarré. "It was to be an evening open to anyone interested in light and lighting, with a full program of top-level speakers, food and drink, and live music.Thus the idea of LightNight was born." The first such event, organized by the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD), was held in April 2002 to coincide with the Light+Build show last year in Frankfurt.
LightNight, a celebration of lighting design, attracted a large number of visitors and a lot of media attention, with international feedback that continued throughout the following year. This encouraged Pfarré, as a member of the current IALD board of directors, to establish LightNight as a recurrent event, parallel to the major lighting fairs around the world.
This year, LightNight will one of the main side events of Lightfair International 2003. Erco Lighting is a partner, and Daniel Libeskind, the architect who won the Ground Zero design competition, will be giving a keynote address on light and architecture. "We are all looking forward to an extraordinary evening," anticipates Pfarré.
