The International Association of Lighting Designers has elected five new members to its board of directors. They are:

Charles G. Stone II, IALD, LC, of New York, NY, president-elect

Michael Souter, FASID, IALD, LC, San Francisco, CA, director of membership

Jeffrey Miller, IALD, Seattle, WA, director of external affairs

Robert Prouse, IALD, LC, New York, NY, director of education

David Bird, IALD, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, director at large

Additionally, two members were elected to serve on the membership committee. They are Larry French, IALD, LC, out of San Francisco and Dawn Hollingsworth, IALD, LC, out of Los Angeles. The new officers and committee members assumed their duties on January 1.

“We are very pleased with these new additions to our board of directors and membership committee,” noted JoAnne Lindsley, FIALD, chair of the nominations and election committee. “We are confident that their industry experience and commitment to the profession will be of great value to our mission of promoting lighting design excellence worldwide.”

President-elect Charles Stone, partner at Fisher Marantz Stone in New York City, is an award-winning lighting designer whose experience encompasses architectural and theatrical projects including concert halls, airports, convention centers, museums, hotels, theme parks, corporate headquarters, and commercial developments around the world.

According to Stone, “the office of president-elect is a new position affording a year to learn, plan, and prepare for the job of president in 2004. I will use that time to meet as many IALD members as I can. Additionally, I will work with and listen closely to current President André Tammes and our past presidents and fellows to understand better the history and vision of the leaders of our profession.”

New director of membership Michael Souter also is an award-winning lighting designer who presently heads Luminae Souter Associates, LLC, in San Francisco. His focus is on architectural lighting design for fine residences, hospitality, high-density housing, health care, museums, and corporate facilities. Souter assumes this leadership role after two terms on the membership committee where he has been recognized for his hard work and aggressive efforts.

Jeffrey Miller, the new director of external affairs, began his lighting design career in New York City and now is director of lighting design at NBBJ, with offices throughout the United States, as well as London and Beijing. Miller has created notable designs for commercial, hospitality, and institutional projects worldwide and has collaborated with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation.

Incoming director of education Robert Prouse has been a member of the IALD since 1977 and has since served on the membership committee, the board, and as a judge for the annual lighting design awards. Along with his position at Brandston Partnership, Inc. in New York, Prouse has been a member of the faculty at the Parsons School of Design in New York City since 1979. He has also taught lighting design at Columbia University and the Pratt Institute.

David Bird, newly elected to a three-year term as director at large, is a founding director of the Vision Design Studio with offices in SE Asia and Australia. Established 12 years ago, Vision was the first independent lighting design practice in Australia. Bird is a 30-year IES member and is currently working with IALD president Tammes and other area lighting designers to establish a strong regional IALD presence.

The IALD, established in 1969, is an international organization dedicated to the professional architectural lighting designer.
