The International Association of Lighting Designers has named its third Lifetime Achievement Award winner and two new fellows; the nods were given at the association’s meeting in Philadelphia, November 28-29. Howard Brandston was honored with the 2001 Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding contributions to the lighting design industry. Motoko Ishii of Japan and Derek Phillips of the United Kingdom were inducted into the 2001 IALD College of Fellows.

Brandston’s award is in recognition of his 40-plus years as a lighting designer and his leadership in lighting design, education, research and standards. His prominent projects include the relighting of the Statue of Liberty, master lighting plans for Detroit’s Central Business District and New Jersey’s Meadowlands Sports Complex. Among his honors are four IALD International Lighting Design Awards. He is the only lighting designer to be included in the Interior Design Hall of Fame. He is also in the Lighting Design Hall of Fame and was presented with the IESNA’s Medal. In addition, Brandston was acclaimed an Honorary Fellow of Britain’s Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers, a privilege limited by Royal Charter to only 25 living persons. In addition to his role as principal at Brandston Partnership, Inc., he is an adjunct professor of architecture at the Lighting Research Center and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York.

Motoko Ishii’s designs for the Yokohama Bay Bridge and Tokyo Bay’s Rainbow Bridge are famous not only as part of the local landscape, but for their beautiful nighttime lighting. She is the author of several books on lighting and the recipient of many international awards including four IALD International Lighting Design Awards. Derek Phillips is the first independent lighting designer in the UK and one of IALD’s founding members. His outstanding projects include the Nikko Hotel and the City Plaza in Hong Kong, Dambulla Caves in Sri Lanka, The Hilton Hotel Heathrow and The Hasbro Building.
