IALD 20th International Lighting Design Awards Call for Entries

The IALD International Lighting Design Awards

were established to increase awareness of quality lighting design by recognizing lighting installations which display high aesthetic achievement backed by technical expertise and exemplify a synthesis of the architectural and lighting design process. As a collection of work, the awarded projects illustrate the diversity of techniques used to create outstanding lighting design.

There are two types of project awards: Awards of Excellence and Awards of Merit. A Special Citation may be given for a particularly innovative aspect of a project's lighting design. One grand prize, the Radiance Award for Excellence in Architectural Lighting Design, will be awarded each year to the project that is judged among all submittals to be the finest example of lighting design excellence. Award-winning projects will be recognized at the IALD Awards Dinner and Presentation on May 7, 2003, in conjunction with Lightfair International. Winning projects will be published in leading architectural and design publications and included in the IALD slide library.

Projects will be judged individually based on aesthetic achievement, technical merit in accordance with the designer's concepts and goals, and effective solutions to project challenges. The IALD encourages submissions of all types and sizes of projects. It is not a competition, and there is no minimum or maximum number of awards granted.

Anyone may enter a project for an award. The project must be a permanent architectural lighting design solution, interior or exterior, for which construction was completed after June 1, 2000. Lighting designs for temporary installations (special events, theatrical performances, light sculpture, light art, etc.) are not eligible. Incomplete entries will not be considered. Submissions must be received no later than February 1, 2003.

This year the IALD is requiring that all submissions be made in electronic format. Entries may be e-mailed or mailed on a disk or CD. Text submissions must be in MS Word format for Windows and images must be 4"x4" high-resolution (300dpi minimum) .jpg files or PowerPoint presentations using only high-resolution .jpg files. No mention or identifiable illustration of a specific lighting design firm or designer may appear as any part of the images or written material, except the cover page. Each entry must include a cover page, a written brief, and project images with a keyed description. Click here to download the PDF document outlining submission requirements.

Entry fee (per entry) is $75 for IALD and LIRC members, $150 for non-members. Payment is by check, money order, or Visa or MasterCard credit cards. Checks must be payable in United States currency, made payable to IALD. A single payment may be used for multiple entries.
