The Howell Binkley Fellowship is designed to offer support and exposure to early-career New York-based lighting designers, and honors the legacy of Tony Award-winning lighting designer Howell Binkley, who took the time to mentor young designers. The fellowship recipient will have direct access to Howell’s long-term associates: Ryan O’Gara and Amanda Zieve.
As part of the fellowship, O'Gara and Zieve will answer questions about the industry and starting a career in New York, and offer practical advice on drafting, technology, and working on a show. Each fellowship lasts three months during the fall.

Previous Fellowship Recipients
Kat Zhou, who was the fellowship recipient in 2021, made her Broadway debut assisting Ken Posner on Mr. Saturday Night. Last year's winner, Samantha (Sam) Weiser, is a graduate of Long Island's High School for the Arts and the University of Michigan.
To be considered for the fellowship, the candidate must:

Be 21 years of age or older

Be a United States citizen

Have at least 2 years of higher education or equivalent experience

If currently in an education program, must be about to graduate. Recent graduates also may apply.

Have a design background

Desire to have a career in theatrical lighting design

Be proactive, reliable, hardworking, mature and a self-starter

Applications for the 2023 fellowship will be accepted March 1, 2023 through March 17, 2023. This year the fellowship will take place in the fall of 2023 (approximately September through November).
