Design Criteria

The goal for the project was to create an immersive, theatrical, intentional and stripped back design. The design used subtlety, mostly static looks to create dark, scary, moody environments with use of only three colors, one for each act of the performance. Use of a single handheld mechanic’s light was featured in the first three songs of the first act.

Project Description

The project was focused around new arrangements of mostly QOTSA classics and deep cuts conceived while recording deep in the Paris catacombs. Music arrangement were for the longtime core QOTSA band members as well as four strings and four horn players. Lighting featured seven Elation KL 8 fresnels on Matthew’s stands and on the floor of the stage in an asymmetric layout using subtle zoom and color variations throughout the performance.

Challenges and Solutions

Challenges included creating a design that embraced the classic concept of less is more as well as creating an aesthetic with the lighting supporting the emotional highs and lows of the performance without distracting from the artistry of the musical arrangements or performance.

Equipment

The touring lighting system consisted of a GrandMA3 full size console, seven Elation KL8 FC fresnels, 4 Matthew’s style C-stands, and a house rig spec’d with two stage trusses of profiles and washes and one front truss of profiles in most cases. 1 mechanics light with warm color temperature LED bulb. Josh wanted a stripped down set with only what was necessary.
