Design Criteria
The main goal is to always keep the artist as the focal point, and this goal was no different for Styles’ Together, Together tour. This goal, along with ensuring the audience feels connected to the artist, has led Silent Partners Studio to specialize in live IMAG FX.
Project Description
For Harry Styles’ 30 night Madison Square Garden residency as part of his Together, Together tour, Silent Partners Studio took the never-been-done-before live effects done in the stadium run and pushed it further with a bit more added complexity.
Since the stage for the MSG residency is in the round with a “halo” screen and an oval LED floor, that allowed for every audience member to have a great view of what was happening on stage no matter where they were sitting. For Silent Partners Studio, that meant finding the right placement for IMAG within the halo screen to showcase Styles, the dancers and band members on stage.
For the MSG residency, Silent Partners Studio, with the support of NOTCH, pushed the live compositing FX a bit further, by also being able to target Styles for effects, and then also target the dancers and band members for effects and background removal. In addition, the team played into the round nature of the screens and rotated some of the content. For example, in Cinema, trippy zotrope styled visuals rotate around the screens, going in between the live feed of Styles and his background.
We leaned into utilizing zactracks technology more during the MSG run of the Together, Together tour. With zactracks, Silent Partners Studio was able to bring location data into programming so they could have content follow Styles around on the LED floor. For example, a sushi followed Styles around during Music for a Sushi Restaurant, and during Satellite, Styles’ position on stage was used to reveal stars and galaxy content.
Challenges and Solutions
This “PIP swapping” added a layer of complexity on top of live compositing FX and pushing what was done on the stadium tour a bit further. The added challenge was fun for the Silent Partners Studio team as they both adapted some content from stadium show, created new content and FX for new songs added to the setlist as Molly Hawkins (Creative Director) reimagined the show for the new venue.
