Project Type
Live for Broadcast. A science and entertainment talk show combining virtual production and LED-based set design, streamed publicly as the culmination of a wider campaign about space exploration.
Project Name
MVM was the commissioning brand and owner of the Future Talks series. Lounge Communication was the campaign and project owner and Visual Europe Group’s direct client.
Visual Europe Group delivered the production at United Illusions Studio 1, with responsibilities spanning concept and set development, visual content, audiovisual systems, recording, post-production, subtitling and streaming.
Design Criteria
MVM’s brief was to continue positioning the company as a future-oriented energy business engaged with scientific, technological and social change. The sixth edition of Future Talks focused on space exploration, connecting questions of energy, resources and sustainability to the wider discussion about life beyond Earth.
The creative team’s goal was to make complex scientific subjects accessible and engaging for a broad audience, while delivering content with value in its own right. A Hungarian astronaut’s journey had made the subject particularly immediate for domestic audiences.
The year’s Moonshot concept centered on the thought: “It is only impossible until it happens.” The design translated this idea into a plausible near future, using a virtual Martian landscape and a spacecraft-inspired discussion environment to bring the experts’ subjects closer to viewers.
The production also had to accommodate a program of more than two hours, multiple presenters and experts, limited guest availability and a tightly compressed delivery schedule.
Project Description
MVM Future Talks is a free, public science and entertainment series bringing leading thinkers together to explore questions shaping humanity’s future. Its sixth edition examined the new space age through a wider campaign comprising two documentary films, media, social and influencer activity, followed by an extended talk show.
For the program, Visual Europe Group transformed United Illusions Studio 1 into two facing environments. In the opening sequence, presenters Puskás-Dallos Péter and Szirmai Gergely spoke with trained research astronaut Gyula Cserényi in a virtual Martian setting, supported by a custom-made background.
Opposite this environment, a second set composed primarily of LED surfaces evoked the interior of a spacecraft or space station. This became the setting for discussions with Hungarian and international experts. Moving between the two spaces created a visual journey from the Martian surface to a place where people might one day work and live. The environments made the possible future under discussion feel tangible and immediate.
VEG’s remit extended from concept and set design through visual content, venue provision, audiovisual systems and recording to post-production, subtitling and streaming. It also coordinated the website, broadcast vehicle and crew, interpretation, catering and the personnel required to operate a television shoot. Approximately 25 specialist subcontractors contributed across these disciplines.
The programme brought together perspectives from astronautics, space medicine, engineering, satellite technology and the space economy, with contributions including Neil deGrasse Tyson. Discussions explored the effects of space travel on the human body, the infrastructure it requires, and its economic and ethical implications.
According to the campaign results supplied for this entry, 9,700 unique IP addresses followed the public stream, and the programme received more than 950,000 views in the weeks after release. Across the wider campaign, documentary content approached one million views, while the microsite recorded more than 410,000 visits before the talk show.
The project’s distinctive contribution was the alignment of its message and production environment: the Moonshot concept became a tangible journey through two complementary sets, with virtual production and LED design supporting the experts’ stories.
Challenges and Solutions
The principal on-site challenge was fitting two production environments into one studio. The Mars setup already occupied part of Studio 1, so the opposing LED-based set had to fit within the remaining footprint while preserving workable space for cameras, crew and movement.
The solution was a tightly coordinated studio layout and running order. Both environments were prepared for the same recording period, allowing the production to move between them while maintaining visual continuity and the flow of the discussions.
Scheduling added another layer of complexity. Experts and a featured guest were available only within limited windows, making transitions time-critical. The creative concept, physical layout and editorial sequence therefore had to be developed together.
The delivery deadline extended the pressure beyond the shoot. The recorded programme was edited overnight for client review the following morning. Revisions then had to be rendered, the completed programme sent for translation and subtitles prepared before the public stream at 18:00 on 13 November.
Close coordination across recording, editing, approval, rendering, translation and online delivery was essential to achieving this next-day turnaround. Managing approximately 25 specialist subcontractors further increased the organizational demands.
The design innovation lay in combining a virtual planetary environment with an opposing LED-based spacecraft interior inside one studio. Together, these settings provided a coherent visual narrative that supported the scientific discussion.
Equipment
United Illusions Studio 1 virtual production environment: Used for the opening Mars sequence to place presenters and the astronaut within a convincing planetary setting.
Custom-made virtual Martian background: Developed to support the Moonshot concept and establish the programme’s visual journey.
LED surfaces: Formed the opposing spacecraft or space-station interior, providing the main visual environment for the expert discussions.
Camera, lighting, sound and audiovisual systems: Supported the recording of the extended talk show across both sets.
Broadcast vehicle and associated systems: Included in the production infrastructure coordinated by VEG.
Editing, rendering, subtitling and online streaming systems: Supported the compressed post-production workflow and public delivery.
