THEATRE CRAFTS: THEN & NOW

THEATRE

Behind the Scenes of a Site-Specific King Lear
The recent Cal Arts site-specific production of King Lear at the Brewery Complex in LA was, as noted in the October issue of ED, a design triumph. But it was also a hugely complex technical feat, which involved building a new floor, setting up a complex video system, building a moveable audience platform, and even making two cars crash. Technical director Bill Ballou, associate TD Michael Casselli, and video coordinator Lap-Chi Chu discuss their work on the project.

New Studio Theatre at the Stratford Festival
To help celebrate its 50th anniversary, the Stratford Festival in Ontario added a fourth space, the intimate 250-seat Studio Theatre. Built out of the former scene shop of the Avon Theatre, the space was designed by architect Elizabeth Davidson of Davidson-Langley Inc. Architects. Participating vendors include Group 1 Acoustics, Irwin Seating, AVAB, Meyer Sound, Stage Research, Yamaha, Tannoy, EAW, and Klark Teknik.

TECHNOLOGY

Lightbox
A representation of a flexible theatre or studio space with focusable fiber-optic fixtures that closely approximate a real space, Lightbox has recently been implemented in the design studio at Syracuse University. Its ongoing development is being overseen by Syracuse alum Charles Kirby and Alex Koziara, assistant professor in the Drama Department’s Design/Tech program at Syracuse University. Michael Eddy reports on the progress and implementation of this intriguing new tool.

Big Lights on Campus
Ohio State University has included moving lights in its design curriculum for the past 10 years. Instructor/lighting designer Mary Tarantino points out what has and hasn't worked in using these tools in the classroom over the years, as well as discussing what the future might hold for moving lights in a school setting.

The Technical Rider
It’s one of the most important documents they have to put together, yet many technical directors for touring shows are in the dark about what should go into a technical rider. Rusty Strauss, technical director for the Peking Acrobats, talks to a variety of venue TDs about what they look for in this often overlooked but very important part of a touring TD’s job.
