Desert Tech: Training In Projection, Rigging, And Electrical Safety

Responding to a need for professional training and development, the Joint Training Initiative of The ESTA Foundation and USITT announces Desert Tech: Electrical, Rigging and Projection Training Sessions to be held at Arizona State University, Tempe, Arizona. The event will be hosted and co-produced by the Herberger College School of Theatre & Film in association with Desert States section of USITT.

This three-day schedule of courses is designed for entertainment technicians at a basic to intermediate level. The projection sessions especially will be a unique opportunity for students and professionals alike, involving hands-on experience with both content creation and projection technology. The first day (taught by myself) will be a rough-and-ready guide to creating media for projection playback, including pointers on shooting, editing, compositing and encoding. The second day (co-taught by myself and Eric Ludacer, the head of projections for Cirque du Soleil’s Love) will focus on projection technology and playback devices.

The electrical courses will be taught by Richard Cadena, ETCP certified entertainment electrician and ETCP recognized trainer, and the rigging courses will be taught by Jay Glerum, ETCP recognized trainer (and the gentleman who literally wrote the book on stage rigging).

In conjunction with the paid training courses, the event will also offer employment information sessions, portfolio reviews and interview opportunities with Cirque du Soleil and ESTA members, as well as a free lighting and effects workshop presented by GAM.

Sessions will be held January 14-16 on the campus of Arizona State University. ETCP certified technicians will receive renewal credits towards re-certification for attending these sessions. Discounted prices are available for USITT and ESTA members, as well as university students.
