Costume Awards to Tenenbaums, Potter

The Royal Tenenbaums

and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone were the big movie winners Saturday at the fourth annual Costume Designer Guild Awards. Unlike the Oscars, the guild divides awards into two categories. Though it was somewhat fanciful and stylized, Karen Patch's work on Wes Anderson's whimsical Tenenbaums took the prize for contemporary design, while Judianna Makovsky's creation of wizard, witch, and other storybook character looks for Harry Potter won in the period/fantasy category.

Two television awards were also handed out. Juliet Polcsa's designs for the HBO series The Sopranos won in the contemporary competition, and Dona Granata's Hollywood recreations in the miniseries Life With Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows were named best period/fantasy design for TV.

The Costume Designer Guild's special award winners included Theadora Van Runkle, for career achievement in film, and Ret Turner, for career achievement in television.
