ARCHITECTURE

The Winter Garden Reborn
Standing in the shadows of the World Trade Center, the Winter Garden, a beautiful and very popular event space, was severely damaged in the attacks of September 11. One year later, it has risen from the ashes to serve as one of the primary memorial sites for the one-year anniversary of the attacks. Vendors include Pook Diemont & Ohl, I. Weiss, SIA Acoustics, H&H Specialties, Crown, Bose, EAW, Midas, Barbizon, High End, Wybron, ETC, Staging Concepts, Fourth Phase, and JR Clancy. Todd Berling Design helped turn this project around in record time, handling the performance lighting, performance rigging, audio, and staging systems. Bob Cashill reports.

CONCERTS

The Rolling Stones Times Three
Though fast approaching 60, and with no new material to promote, the Rolling Stones have kicked off yet another world tour, this one dubbed Licks. The hook this time around is that the tour will be scaled for three different-sized venues, from stadiums to arenas to theatres/nightclubs, all in one tour. Spearheading that massive undertaking is legendary production manager Jake Berry; the design team includes Patrick Woodroffe (lights), Willie Williams (video), and Mark Fisher (sets). Participating vendors include Vari*Lite,Syncrolite, ACL, Diversitronics, Mole-Richardson, Lycian, Strong, Flying Pig Systems, Avolites, Reel EFX, Tomcat, Columbus McKinnon, Tait Towers, VLPS, and LSD/Fourth Phase. Michael Eddy and Ellen Lampert-Gréaux report.

THEATRE

Catherine & Baz on La Bohème
Director Baz Luhrmann and his wife, designer Catherine Martin (Moulin Rouge), are hitting the Great White Way with, of all things, an opera: La Bohème. Why opera, and why now? John Calhoun talks to them about this project and about their design collaboration in general.
