Our annual spotlight on the best and brightest in entertainment technology. This year’s honorees: theatre sound design firm Acme Sound Partners (Tom Clark, Mark Menard, and Nevin Steinberg); projection designers Batwin & Robin; wig and makeup designer Mike Potter and costume designer Ariane Phillips for the film version of Hedwig and the Angry Inch; the design and technical crew of the Seattle Opera production of The Ring Cycle (set designer Tom Lynch, costume designer Martin Pakledinaz, lighting designer Peter Kaczorowski, technical director Robert D. Schaub, associate technical director Robert F. Reynolds, scenic studio manager Michael Moore, master scenic artist Kitty Kavanaugh, fire designer and flight technical director Charles T. Buck, hair and makeup designer Denise O'Brien, and costume shop manager Lise Schellman); show control and automation firm Show Motion; and Willie Williams, the show designer for the U2 Elevation tour.

OPERA: The Ring Cycle at Seattle Opera
Seven years in the making, the Seattle Opera’s ambitious production of Wagner’s entire Ring Cycle featured the talents of set designer Tom Lynch, lighting designer Peter Kaczorowski, and costume designer Martin Pakledinaz, plus the technical expertise of the entire backstage crew, led by technical director Robert Schaub. Participating vendors include Barbizon, Gerreits, I. Weiss, Rose Brand, Sunbelt Rentals, Tomcat, Westsun, Display and Costume Supply, Hollywood Lights, Altman, Arri, ETC, Strand, GAM, L&E, Wybron, Pani, City Theatrical, Pani, Kaufman Davis Studios, and High End Systems. Phillipa Kieraly reports.
FILM: The Lord of the Rings
J.R.R. Tolkein's Lord of the Rings comes to the screen in the form of three movies, the first of which is being released in December. Commandeering the monumental project is New Zealand director Peter Jackson, who has marshaled the Kiwi design and technology forces--including production designer Grant Major, costume designer Ngila Dickson, and the Weta effects house--to realize Hobbiton, Rivendell, and other realms of Middle-earth.
