SPECIAL REPORT: HOUSES OF WORSHIP
Planning and Executing Live Events
The size and scope of events produced by houses of worship has grown to staggering heights over the years; we’ll take a look at events from three organizations—the Crystal Cathedral, the Church of Scientology, and the Christ Community Church —talking to the technical director and the design and production crew about how they pull off these events. Vendors for the Crystal Cathedral include Strand, Martin, Altman, Total Structures, and Rosco. Products for the Church of Scientology were supplied by Angstrom Lighting LA, Selecon, Martin, and High End. The Christ Community Church in St. Charles used products from ETC, Altman, Pathway, High End, and Intelligent Lighting Creations. David Johnson and Ellen Lampert-Gréaux report.
ARCHITECTURE
South Coast Rep
South Coast Repertory's new Folino Theatre Center, a $19 million expansion project designed by architect Cesar Pelli, opened in October 2002, and houses the 507-seat Segerstrom Stage (the former Mainstage), the 336-seat Julianne Argyros Stage (part of the new addition) and a modified 99-seat Second Stage now called the Nicholas Studio. Consultants on the project included: Theatre Projects Consultants (theatre consultants), Engineering Harmonics (sound system consultants), Southern California Sound Image (sound, video, and communications), Stagecraft Industries (staging install, subbed traps to staging concepts), Anderson & Howard Electric, and Staging Concepts (traps). Equipment includes lighting products by Altman, Strand, Wybron, City Theatrical, Veam, Ushio, Philips, Osram, Vari-Lite, and Martin. Audio gear includes products by Aphex, Crest, dBX, Marantz, E-Mu, LCS, Shure, Tascam, Renkus-Heinz, QSC, Sennheiser, Beyer, Clear-Com, Telex, AMX, Atlas, Audio-Technica, JBL, Lowell, Peavey, Tannoy, Fostex, Blonder-Tongue, Panasonic, and Sony. Ellen Lampert Gréaux reports.
THEATRE
Aladdin
In an effort to help boost sagging attendance, Disney has taken the blueprint it created for The Lion King—taking innovative theatrical artists and turning an animated film into a live musical—and employed it in a theme park setting. Disney’s Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular is a 40-minute live version of the hit film, performed three times a day, seven days a week, at the 2,000-seat Hyperion Theatre in Disney’s California Adventures park in Anaheim. Directed by Francesco Zambello, with sets by Peter J. Davison (Tony winner for Copenhagen), costumes by Anita Yavich, and lighting by Mark McCullough, Aladdin features 18 scene changes, 250 costume changes, and two stage crews. If it proves popular, this could be the next trend in theme parks. Companies involved in the project include Columbus McKinnon, Motion Labs, Morpheus, Wybron, Nocturn, Wildfire, Strand Lighting, GAM, Rosco, High End, Vari*Lite, Lee, Lighting & Electronics, MA Lighting, and Martin Professional. Automation System for Scenery and Deck Automation on current show was provided by Scenic Technologies and Flying Automation for Performers and effects was provided by Fisher Technology Inc. Peter Landau reports.
